How do I plant my tree?

Step 1:

Make a planting hole twice the size of the tree's root ball/pot.

Step 2:

Break up the walls of the dug hole with the shovel.

Step 3:

Add a planting hole improver if required.

Step 4:

Plant the tree as high as it was in the container.

Step 5:

Make a raised border around the tree with soil for easy watering.

Step 6:

Place two tree stakes a 30cm from the tree and attach them to the stakes with natural binding material.

Step 7:

Clear a 1-metre diameter tree bed of plantings and keep it that way for the first few years.

Step 8:

During the dry period, water densely, on average 10 litres once a week. If in doubt, always contact us.

A planting leaflet is included with every delivery.

Advice:

The average walnut tree does not like a wet location, so make sure you plant it at a slightly higher spot in your garden so that the tree does not end up in a puddle of water during the winter.

About the species

The origins of these species are North America but later spread courtesy of the Indians, hence the Indian names. The species grow to an average height of 10-15 metres but are easy to prune and keep smaller if desired. After 3 to 4 years, they give the first fruits. In this combination of species, all three pollinate each other for good fertilisation.

 

Carya i. Pawnee

One of the larger nuts in the Carya family. Maturation starts in September, this is earlier than most Pekan nuts. The oil content of the fruit is very high, so people sometimes specifically want the nut from the Pawnee. The Carya i. Pawnee is partly self-pollinating but we recommend planting it together with pollinator varieties. The pawnee is known for its high fruit bearing. Western Schley is often planted with the pawnee.

 

Carya i. Desirable

The Desirable's Pekan nuts are medium in size and buttery in flavour. In terms of production, it is slightly lower than the other varieties. Its flowering and ripening time is a bit later than most other varieties, making it serve as a good pollinator for the Pawnee. As a result, the Pawnee gives high production nuts.

 

Carya i. Western Schley

Western Schley's Pekan nuts are just a bit smaller than Pawnee's but are known for their good flavour. Maturation is in late September to mid-October. Due to its high oil content, the nuts store well.

    Ich war sehr zufrieden mit den drei Pekannussbäumen, die ich aus Deutschland erhalten habe. Die Lieferung erfolgte sehr schnell und die Qualität der Pflanzen ist erstklassig. Jetzt freue ich mich auf mein Pekannussbaum-Experiment. Hier in Dänemark kann man keine verschiedenen Sorten kaufen, aber jetzt kenne ich einen Ort, wo man das kann.
