About the Pawnee
Carya illoinensis ‘Pawnee’ is one of the most commonly used species for pitch pine cultivation in the Carya family. The tree is native to North America but was mainly spread by Native Americans, hence the species' name.
The height of a mature tree is 10-15 metres. However, the tree prunes very well and can be kept smaller if desired.
This makes the tree ideal for the garden but it can also be planted well in nature or in parks.
The tree is partially self-pollinating, but we recommend planting it together with another species of Carya. For this, we have put together a peccarya package that you can also order from us. This package ensures proper pollination of the pekan nut trees.
The improved Carya species are very difficult to obtain, but from now on they are available from us!
Quality of note
The Pawnee is one of the larger nuts in the Carya family and starts ripening in September, this is earlier than most Pecan nuts. The oil content of the fruit is very high so people sometimes specifically desire the nut from the Pawnee.
