The pecan tree is a deciduous tree from the walnut family that can grow up to 40 meters tall and live for hundreds of years. It requires deep, well-drained soil and does not tolerate drought well, making artificial irrigation necessary during dry periods. The tree is also sensitive to strong winds, so some shelter is beneficial, but it still needs sufficient space to grow.

Pecan trees are generally resistant to diseases, fungi, and insects. However, unfavorable conditions during the flowering season, such as insufficient soil moisture, can increase the risk of these problems. Proper watering is essential, as a lack of moisture can also reduce the tree’s nut production.

The Life Cycle of the Pecan Tree

It takes approximately seven years for a pecan tree to start producing nuts. Pecans are rich in folic acid, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin B, and vitamin E, making them a nutritious addition to a healthy diet. The pecan tree blooms between May and June, with harvesting taking place from mid-October. When ripe, the husk splits open, allowing the nuts to fall to the ground, where they are immediately ready for consumption.

To extend their shelf life, pecans can be dried by placing them in a warm area with low humidity before storing them in a dry location.

Pecan trees generally do not require pruning, except for the removal of damaged or diseased branches. Young trees may be pruned to shape their growth by removing lower branches. The best time for pruning is in winter when the tree is dormant. This is especially beneficial for young trees, as it reduces the risk of winter damage. If the right rootstock is used, pecan trees can be successfully transplanted, preferably when the tree is young and dormant during winter.
