The Juglans cinerea Beckwith
The walnut tree Juglans cinerea Beckwith is native to Ohio (USA) and is also called butternut, butternut, white walnut, white walnut or grey walnut. It is a tree native to the US and southern Canada that can grow up to 20 metres tall. The tree has a heavy, short trunk whose lowest branches have the ability to bend downwards. The leaves are dark green with a shallow, widely serrated, leaf margin.
The note
The nuts hang together in clusters of 3-5. The nuts (4-6 cm. long) are irregular and sharply pointed and have a thick shell. It owes its name butternut to the sweet syrup that can be extracted from the nuts. Among walnut trees, this is one of the most hardy species. Juglans cinerea Beckwith can self-pollinate!
