Buying a Cornelian Cherry (Cornus) Fruit Tree

Early Spring Blooms and Seasonal Beauty
This cornelian cherry blooms early in the spring, during February and March. The first blossoms typically appear in the second or third year of growth, followed by the first fruits. With its striking yellow flowers, this plant is a real eye-catcher. Thanks to its fragrant blooms, the cornelian cherry is an excellent plant for attracting bees and other pollinators.
The leaves emerge after the flowering period in April, adding another layer of seasonal interest. Not only is this plant stunning in spring, but it also transforms beautifully in autumn. Its foliage turns vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and deep red. Additionally, this plant is highly winter-hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as -35°C. Due to its changing appearance across the seasons, the cornelian cherry is widely used in parks and gardens. Its compact size makes it ideal for smaller gardens as well.
Growth and Care
The cornelian cherry can reach a height of approximately 6 meters, depending on its location. It thrives best in calcareous, nutrient-rich soil with a pH value around 7. A well-draining yet moisture-retentive soil is most beneficial for its growth. This plant adapts well to both sunny and shaded conditions, with partial shade being a perfect balance.
One of its major advantages is that it is self-pollinating, meaning it does not require another tree nearby to produce fruit. The cherry-red berries ripen in August and September and are completely edible. These berries grow up to 2 cm in size and have a slight plum-like taste when ripe. They can be combined with apples and pears to make vitamin C-rich jams and compotes.
